COUNTRY WEEK CRICKET

GOOD PERFORMANCE BY SOUTHLAND L. M. UTTLEY IN FORM WITH BAT (Special to Tire Times) DUNEDIN, November 24. Fine weather, the outfields in good order and fairly fast wickets provided excellent conditions for the first day of the country week tournament organized by the Otago Cricket Association. Southland met Vincent and North Otago played South Otago and in each game there was some good scoring. Southland and North Otago were clearly the superior teams and their match tomorrow should be an interesting one. • There were two centuries scored today, L, M. Uttley /Southland) getting 111 and Kinder (North Otago) 107. Southland dismissed. Vincent for 135 and scored 325 for six wickets. North Otago scored 307 for seven wickets (declared) and dismissed South Otago for 90. Vincent batted first against a strong Southland team and but for an excellent innings of 69 not out by F. Partridge would have made a sorry show. This batsman played a lot of loose strokes, particularly after lunch, when he was prepared to take chances, but he also played some very welltimed shots, mostly on the leg side or through the covers. His was an invaluable innings for his side. The Southland bowling was steady, but not particularly dangerous. Purdue got some life out of the wicket and McKenzie and Forde bowled well. Spence and Uttley gave Southland a fine start, taking the score past 120 before Spence’s solid innings was ended by a good catch at point. Uttley was scoring freely, but not rashly, and he reached his 100 after 120 minutes at the crease. He hit 10 4’s and altogether batted very attractively. Scandrett’s 69 was a brisk business. He wasted no time and hit 11 4’s. Cutler was shaping well. McGowan helped to flog the loose bowling. Vincent’s attack was not strong and there were many holes in the field. NORTH OTAGO’S GOOD SCORE After losing several wickets fairly early North Otago compiled the good score of 307 against the rather loose bowling of South Otago. The total was largely the result of a vigorous partner-. ship between Kinder and Houghton and an aggressive century by the former. Smith’s 32 was the only respectable contribution to the South Otago total of 90. CENTRAL-WESTERN COMPETITION NIGHTCAPS BEATS FAIRFAX The Nightcaps cricket team visited Fairfax to play in the Central-Western competition and secured a two-noint win. Despite rough weather a few periods of sunshine enabled play to be begun, but finally heavy rain necessitated a stoppage of play. M. Grant, with 42 not out, batted well. A. Excell (19) and J. Allen (11)

were the next best scorers for Nightcaps. Nicolson, with 14, made the top score for Fairfax. Fletcher, however, gained a well-earned 11. A. Excell’s bowling average was 4.86 and Moseby took two wickets. With four wickets down for Nightcaps, it was decided to discontinue play and a two-point win went to Nightcaps.
