CLOSE FINISHES AT CARNIVAL

EX-PUPILS’ SWIMMING CLUB MILLAR’S OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE Keen competition was a feature of the annual carnival of the Ex-Pupils Swimming Club held in the Tepid Baths last night. The majority of the races produced close finishes and the excitement of the crowd was intense. Four championship events were held but none of the Southland records was broken. L. Barry would have had to swim an exceptionally fast race to break the record for the 100 yards junior boys’ championship. He swam very easily, but was handicapped by having to swim by himself. In the 50 yards intermediate girls’ championship the winner, Miss J. Macdonald, was 2 3-ssec outside the record time established by Miss D. Symon in 1936. Her win, although narrow, was convincing. The record for the 220 yards intermediate boys’ championship was not endangered. Some exciting swimming was seen m the 100 yards men’s senior championship, K. Shaw and W. J. Johnson having a keen tussle for first place. Johnson was successful by a touch and his victory wsis well deserved. Although this championship race produced a close finish, it was slightly disappointing as far as the time was concerned. It was thought that the Southland record would be broken, but Johnson failed by the narrow margin of 4-ssec. ’ A. C. Millar put up an outstanding performance to win the 100 yards open handicap race in the fast time of 58 3-ssec. Although he was placed only third in the championship race, Millar swam splendidly in the handicap, event and won in convincing fashion. His time was 2sec lower than Johnson’s time in the championship race. Millar’s failure in the championship could be attributed to some extent to the fact that he fouled the ropes in the first lap. The handicap events attracted good entries—although there was a number of scratchings because of sickness —and some fast swimming was seen. There was a high standard of performance in the open dive handicap, which was won by L. Blaikie from C. Henry. Henry spoilt his chances of success by a flat entry into the water in his voluntary dive. The work of the officials was most satisfactory and the programme was completed in.good time.
