AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE POLICY UPHELD
NEWSPAPERS ACCUSED OF MISREPRESENTATION
SYDNEY, October 24.
The Minister of Defence (Mr H. V. C. Thorby) in a broadcast address replied to criticism of the Government’s defence policy. He said unfair and misleading statements had appeared in the newspapers. He claimed that the meeting of the Loan Council, far from being a failure, was a definite success, for all states had agreed to co-operate with the Commonwealth on the important task of defence. The Treasurer (Mr R. G. Casey), speaking at Canberra, declared that the Premier of New South Wales (Mr B. S. B. Stevens) was mainly responsible for the partial failure of the conference, and asserted that Mr Stevens’s monetary policy yras inflationary.
