IMPROVEMENTS IN EDENDALE

GRANT SOUGHT BY TOWN BOARD SOUTHLAND COUNTY COUNCIL MEETS A grant for improvements within the township of Edendale was sought by the Edendale Town Board in a letter read at yesterday’s meeting of the Southland County Council. It was stated that it was the practice some years ago for the Southland County Council to make an annual grant to the board but since the introduction of motor-drivers’ licences the grant had been discontinued. In recent years the board had received the motor-drivers’ licence fees only of licencees resident in the township, any person, residing outside the area being issued with a county licence. It was decided to reply that there were no funds available and that the council was sealing roads in the township. Several ratepayers in Oreti and Hokonui ridings, petitioned the council .to complete the formation and gravelling of the Waimea Valley road between Fairplace station and Wantwood station. It was decided to apply for a grant to do the work next year. The police constable at Tokanui, wrote stating that the parking of cars about some of the dance halls constituted a problem, and suggested that certain areas should be declared parking areas. It was decided to approve of three areas. The resident Public Works Department engineer (Mr W. G. Pearce) wrote stating that Mr D. McGill, Te Tipua, had made application to the Minister for one mile and a-quarter of McGill’s road to be completed, stating that four farmers owned land adjoining and the land on both sides was cultivated. The matter was left in the hands of the member and engineer. The following tenders were accepted: Winton riding.—Tanner road, Browns: Swain and Sons, £214 10/-. Toetoes riding—Wyndham-Mokoreta and Gleriham ridings: D. Swain and Sons, £139 4/7. z Seven ratepayers forwarded a petition to have the road between the properties of J. R. Hunter and W. A. Macpherson at Springhills, opened to give access to their farms and the railway station. It was decided that the member for the riding and the engineer inquire into the matter.
