MISS FLEMING’S GOLF SUCCESS

WIN IN AUSTRALIAN MIXED FOURSOMES NEW ZEALAND PLAYER IS MODEL OF STEADINESS (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received August 12, 9.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 12. The Australian women’s golf championship meeting at the Australian Golf Club course at Kensington opened today with the mixed foursomes championship over 36 holes. The event was won by J. Allerton and Miss Valmai Fleming (New Zealand). The scores of the first three pairs were:— Allerton and Miss Fleming 79-80-159 H. Cutler and Mrs Goodall 81-79-160 L. Hore and Mrs Hore 82-79-161 The scores of the other New Zealanders are as follows:— C. Rowaid and Miss Helean 81-84-165 Mr and Mrs Fullerton-Smith 86-85-171 B. Hall and Miss Rutherford 85-91-176 D. Coghlan and Mrs Crombie 91-96-187 A. Shepherd and Miss Buchanan 85-92-177 D. Hungerford and Miss Hoinabrook 90-88-178 G. Miller and Miss Rutherford 85-91-176 Brown and Mrs Macrae 91-91-182 B. Gaisford and Miss Illston failed to return a card. The other New Zealanders did not take part. Miss Fleming and her youthful partner knew they required par figures, a 3 and a 4, for the last two holes to win the event and they played both holes perfectly. Allerton’s 180-yard approach to the last green was a beautiful stroke. Miss Fleming ran a long putt up within inches of the hole. The New Zealanders, especially the members of the Tasman Cup team, are settling down to the new conditions very well and in practice rounds are returning scores in the low 80’s. Miss Fleming today was a model of steadiness. Mrs Crombie is experiencing slight uncertainty from the tees, otherwise she was hitting the shots with confidence and accuracy.
