AUSTRALIAN MINERS FAVOUR ULTIMATUM
ISSUE PROBABLE NEXT WEEK (Received August 12, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 12. The Miners’ Federation Convention endorsed the Central Council’s recommendation that the Federal and State Governments and colliery proprietors should be served with an ultimatum giving them 14 days in which to reply to the miners’ claims. The ultimatum will probably be issued next week. The Greater Newcastle Council will ask both the Commonwealth and State Governments to intervene in the mining dispute and to consider the whole question of rehabilitation of the coal industry.
