Cable News In Brief

Whaling Agreement—The International Whaling Conference has concluded a convention which will shortly be signed largely continuing the position established by last year’s convention. It is expected that Japan will ultimately subscribe to it. (London.)

“CONSCIENCE MONEY.”— A resident of Auckland, writing to the Victorian Railway Commissioner, forwarded £2 as “conscience money.” He explained that it was for a railway fare, as he had taken an over-age child on a journey for a half-fare when visiting Victoria last year. (Melbourne.)

SLUMP DENIED.— The British Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) declined to accept a suggestion which was made in the House of Commons at question time on Thursday that there was a business slump. He assured the House, however, that the department concerned had the possibility of a cyclical recession in economic activity, and the measures desirable to meet it, constantly under review.—(British Official Wireless.)

IRAQI ARMY.— The King has approved of the appointment of Colonel C. G. Waterhouse as Inspector-General and Military Adviser to the Ministry for Defence for the British military mission attached to the Iraq Army, in succession to Major-General H. W. M. Watson. The appointment, which will carry the rank of major-general, will take effect in August.—(British Official Wireless.)

DESTROYER STRENGTH.— After further consideration of the adequacy of the destroyer strength of the Royal Navy and of the new construction programme, the British Government has decided not to include flotilla destroyers in the current year’s programme. This information was given in the House of Commons by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty (Mr G. H. Shakespeare).—(British Official Wireless.)
