FUTURE CAPITAL OF NEW GUINEA

SALAMAUA SELECTED BY FEDERAL CABINET CANBERRA, June 22. The Federal Cabinet has decided that Salamaua will be the future administrative capital of New Guinea, in place of Rabaul, which was severely damaged by volcanic disturbances last year. The Minister of External Affairs (Mr W. M. Hughes) announced that a road would immediately be constructed from Salamaua to Wau, which is the centre of a rich gold mining area. The cost of setting up the new capital, including harbour works, would be about £350,000.
