RIVERTON

PLUNKET SOCIETY At the annual meeting of the Riverton branch of the Plunket Society there was a fair attendance of members. Mrs B. Hancock was the guest of honour and the president (MrsE.H. Gray), presented her with a bouquet of flowers as a token of appreciation of her long services as a committee member. The president’s report stated:— “The year has been uneventful, subscriptions remaining at about the same level as the previous year. The only unfortunate fact is that the balance shows a debit of £2 16/3. It is with regret that’ we have to refer to the death in March of the founder of the society, Sir Truby King, a man whose life work will be remembered by mothers in more countries than New Zealand. Eleven committee meetings were held during the year, all being well attended. Nurse Kendall’s resignation took effect at the end of August and Nurse Miller visited Riverton for the first time on September 7. We wish Nurse Miller every success in Riverton, and in the six months she has visited here she has gained the confidence of mothers by her conscientiousness. Mr and Mrs Dodds still maintain the same standard of efficiency and we thank Mr Dodds for all that he has done during the year in repairing pickets and papering the cottage.” In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president thanked all committee members fox' their loyalty, and said it was with regret that she was not seeking reelection. The following committee was elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs W. Smyth; vice-president, Mesdames Gray, Hancock, Tweedie, Playfair, Philp and Walden; treasurer, Mrs Borland; secretary, Mrs Angus; committee, Mesdames Craig, Webb, Johnstone, Robertson, McNaughton and Armstrong. RUGBY FOOTBALL In tile first match of the Western District Rugby Union’s senior competition, Orepuki beat Riverton by three points to nil. The game throughout was full of interest. Wheelen was one of the most prominent players on the ground. He scored for Orepuki a few minutes before time.
