BOWLS CLUB COMPETITIONS IN PROGRESS The competitions of the Otautau Bowling Club are in progress. Following are the results to date:— Championship Singles.—D. Manuel beat E. Leckie, H. Braxton, R. Brown and J. Kirk, and lost to the Rev. Mr Robinson; E. T. Silverwood beat A. C. White; A. C. White beat G. B. Burns; H. Chandler beat the Rev. Mr Robinson and lost to R. Brown; H. Braxton beat the Rev. Mr Robinson and H. Chandler and lost to D. Manuel; G. B. Burns beat E. Leckie and lost to A. C. White and R. Smart.
Championship Pairs.—G. McMillan and H. Braxton beat T. O’Leary and D. Manuel; R. Smart and C. Renowden beat G. B. Burns and T. Walker and J. Kirk and A. C. White; T. O’Leary and D. Manuel beat E. Leckie and G. B. Saxelby; R. Brown and C. Steven beat T. O’Leary and D. Manuel and P. Sheedy and D. Ballam; J. Kirk and A. C. White beat G. B.- Burns and T. Walker, G. R. McMilland and H. Braxton, P. Sheedy and D. Ballam, and E. Leckie and G. B. Saxelby. J. Kirk and A. C. White, with five wins, are the winners of this competition. Handicap Pairs.—L. Thwaites and T. Walker (9) lost to J. Morton and H. Braxton (7); D. Manuel and C. Steven (7) lost to J. G. Connolly and G. Sinclair (7). FARMERS’ UNION At a meeting of the Aparima branch of the Farmers’ Union the president, Mr W. R. Ayson, was chairman. A motion of sympathy with Mr G. A Burnett and his family was carried. Tire new freezing works award was discussed. It was stated that the lamb schedule, in comparison with last season, meant a drop of 3/9 a lamb. In spite of this, increased costs had to be met and killing costs had increased by 100 per cent during the past 10 years. It was decided that the following remit be forwarded .to the Southland executive: “That because of the position of seeds dressed on account of by mercantile firms, the Grain and Seeds Committee be asked to look into the matter and report.” The chairman reported that in company with Mr J. H. Beck Ke had attended a meeting of the Riverton District Veterinary Club on February. 2, and said this club had been in operation since the beginning of this year, with a membership of 150. The Aparima branch. had been asked to join the movement, as 400 members were required to make the club a success. He outlined the objects of the club and the charges to be adopted, with a maximum subscription of £4 7/6 a year. The privileges to be derived from membership were: (1). Allowing for a veterinarian at call; (2) one visit of inspection annually; (3) free castration of handled colts and docking; (4) free speying of heifers.
- It was decided that the . matter be considered at a future meeting, pending a canvass by the Riverton District Club.
