RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION PLAN FOR BOWLING GREEN At the monthly meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, the president (Mr J. Sloan) presided over the following members: Messrs M. Turner, C. Smith, J. Simmers, J. Heathcote, J. Campbell, J. K. Calder and C. Young. It was decided that a carnival should be held and that part of the proceeds should be set aside for the making of a bowling green. The Stewart Island Athletic Club held a successful dance in the Oban Public Hall. It is the intention of the club to hold a big sports meeting in the future. MISSIONARY UNION The first meeting of the Presbyterian Women’s Union for 1938 was held in the manse, the president (Sister Peters) presiding. Mrs W. Noble gave a talk on her work as a missionary in India. Mrs Noble and her husband, who work in the interests of the “Missions of Faith” are stationed in the South of India on the Malabar Coast It was just on seven years since they first left for India, said Mrs Noble. At first they found it very difficult to learn the language of the people, _ and the ways of the people. She was in charge . of an orphanage of small boys, held women’s meetings and visited the homes of the people as far as possible. Mrs Noble said that in South India education was more advanced than in any other Government controlled part of India. About 16 miles distant from Mrs Noble’s station was a hospital for lepers, with 550 patients. Mr and Mrs Noble are on furlough . and will return to India shortly. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs K. Keith, Norfolk Island, are on a tour of New Zealand and are guests at Ferndale House. Dr J. P. Shaw and Mrs Shaw, Mosgiel, are spending a holiday on Stewart Island and are guests at Greenvale House. Mr W. Mann, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Palmerston, is a guest at Ferndale House.

Mr Powley, inspector of the Post and Telegraph Department, is a guest at Oban House.

Mrs E. Jolly and Messrs N. and D. Jolly, Cromwell, are guests at Woodslea House.

Mr and Mrs W. Noble, India, are spending a holiday on Stewart Island and are the guests of Mr and Mrs J. W. Squires. ' • ■ Misses M. and E. Midson, Brisbane, Australia, are on a tour of New Zealand, and are guests at Ferndale House. Mr Service, of the Post and Telegraph Department, paid a short visit to the island during the week-end, and was a guest at Ferndale House. Mr W. King and Miss King, Gore, are guests at Woodslea House. Mr and Mrs Tutty, Invercargill, who have been spending a holiday on the island as the guests of Mr and Mrs H Pollock, Golden Bay, returned to the main land on Wednesday. Mr and Mrs L. Aitken, Christchurch, are spending a holiday on the island and are guests at Greenvale House. Mr and Miss Thomson, Irida, New South Wales, are guests at Ferndale House. , .. . ......

Irwin and Nurses Richardson and Jefferies, of the school medical staff, are making their anntial inspection of the pupils of the Half Moon Bay school. They are staying at Ferndale House. Mr E. McNary, of the Botanical Gardens, Dunedin, is a guest at Ferndale House. Mr Salmond and Miss Salmond, who spent a holiday on the island and were guests at Greenvale House, left for the mainland on Wednesday. Mr Lewis, Invercargill, is a guest at Oban House. Mr and Mrs J. K. Palmer, Dunedin, are guests at Woodslea House. Mr L Newman, Dunedin, is a guest at Oban House. Misses Olive and Cobham, Marton, North Island, are guests at Ferndale House. Mr and Mrs J. W. Squires are spending a holiday at their summer residence on the island. Mr and Mrs W. Mitchell, Panton street, Invercargill, are guests at Ferndale House. Mr Phillips, Gore, is a guest at Oban House.
