WINTON
SEALING OF STATE HIGHWAY COST TO BOROUGH COUNCIL OF EXCESS WIDTH A letter from the Main Highways Board to the meeting of the Winton Borough Council discussing the reconstruction and sealing of the borough section of the Queenstown-Invercar-gill State highway stated that based upon the estimated cost of the work the amount the council would be liable for for work on the excess width within the borough would be £2*os 18/6. The actual sum payable, stated the letter, would be less or greater than this sum according to the amount for which the contract was let. As the board agreed on application to accept payment in two instalments, councillors stated they were in favour of the work being done. There were present:—The Mayor (Mr T. Walker) and Crs N. Metzger, J. Butler, F. Tilley and N. Eastlake. Mr J. S. A. McDougall, the borough representative on the Southland Hospital Board, was nominated for the balance of the term.
Seasonal greetings were exchanged at the end of the meeting. PERSONAL
The Rev. John Newlands, of Winton, will leave this week on his annual holidays. The Rev. A. Macfarlane, of Riverton, will conduct the services at the Winton and Lochiel Presbyterian churches on Sunday. BOWLS In the Central Bowling Club’s competitions only four players are left in the men’s championship. In the first life, R. Balch beat C. Hughes in a close game, 3 up, afterjhe former was one up and one head to go. In the second life, J. Harvey beat N. Metzger, and W. Balch beat C. Watson. J. Harvey also beat T. Darnill and now meets W. Balch, the winner to play C. Hughes. The winner of this match will play R. S. Balch in the final.
