SOUTHLAND CUP AND HURDLES

(By

HERMES)

The Southland Cup and Southland Hurdles, the leading events in Southland to be run at the Invercargill Club’s track on Wednesday evening, have attracted good fields, including Happy Win and Tolan from Dunedin, Tom’s Kid, Ohai, Eighteen Carat, Wairio, and Camera from Nightcaps. Altogether 15 have accepted for the cup, and 10 for the hurdles. Several fast trials were recorded during the week-end. Donaldson was slightly ahead of Jimmy Carlton over an interesting run of 150 yards.' Bonnette, Mah Boy, Jean Batten and Fullerton finished in that order over the cup distance. Although Bonnette finished first, Mah Boy, who is on three yards next Wednesday, gave an encouraging display and promises to play a prominent part in the cup. Herd Laddie, Windsor Lad and Maori Song finished in line over 200 yards. Maori Song is showing fine form, and promises to go well in the Juvenile. G. Bang ran solo over 150 yards and, although inclined to overstride at present, looks a champion in the making. Princess Be Good and Fleetham were a well-matched pan- over 180 yards, with Fleetham slightly in front at the finish. Trix Be Good, a lazy track worker, did not show his best in a run with Bonnette and Mah Boy, but is capable of extending the best with the colours on. G Whiz, who has been taken over by Mr R. Ferguson, was sprinted twice over 100 yards and showed a good turn of speed; . War Lady is still showing the effects of her sickness and did not show her true form in a run with Fleetham. Good reports have been received of Eighteen Carat and Happy King. The former is one of the early picks for the Cup. , Great interest is being taken in the open hurdle race on Wednesday ana the meeting of Bonnette, Margaret Bell, Flying Shadow, Lady G, Camera, Jean Batten, Fullerton, Eighteen Carat and Trix Be Good should produce a fine The following should be prominent in their respective heats: SOUTHLAND CUP First Heat.—Donaldson, Tom’s Kid and Bonnette.
