“LEARN TO SWIM” WEEK

PREVIOUS RECORDS BROKEN BIG ATTENDANCES AT BATHS

All previous records were broken at the Municipal Baths yesterday when the “Learn to Swim” week continued. Because of the very warm weather about 1019 persons patronized the baths, the biggest number that has ever attended in one day during a “Learn to Swim” week. Before 7 o’clock there were 63 persons present and throughout the day the baths officials and instructors were kept busy. The attendances of school children were particularly heavy, more than 160 pupils from the Middle school alone being present during the morning. During the tea session more than 100 persons attended and in the evening about 350 were in the pool. Following is the result of the aggregate swim held last evening:— 33 1-3 YARDS OPEN DASH HANDICAP.— First heat: J. Couling 1, V. Grenfell 2, J. Cockerell 3. Time, 0.17 1-5. Second heat: A. Wilson 1, M. Jones 2, N. Hinton 3. Time, 0.18 1-5. Third heat: A. Inglis 1, Miss L. Gellatly 2, C. Martin 3. Time, 0.17 2-5. Fourth heat: J. Coatsworth 1, V. Osmond 2, A. Brown 3. Time, 0.17 4-5. Fifth heat: R. Glennie, P. Malthus 2. Time, 0.19. First semi-final: Inglis 1, Wilson 2, Martin 3. Time, 0.18 2-5. Second semi-final: Brown 1, Coatsworth 2, Miss Gellatly 3. Time, 0.20 1-5. Third semi-final: Grenfell 1, Couling 2, Osmond 3. Time, 0.18. Final: Inglis, Brown 2, Wilson 3, Grenfell 4. Time, 0.18 1-5. The leaders in the aggregate competition are:—A. Brown 19 points, V. Osmond 14, Miss L. Gellatly 14, J. Coatsworth 13, A. Inglis 12, C. Martin 12, A. Wilson 10, J. Couling 10 and V. Grenfell 8. PROGRAMME FOR TODAY The sessions at the baths today will be as follows:—6.3o to 8 a.m., general public coaching; 8 to 9 a.m., learners, with centre instructors; 9 to 9.30 a.m., Technical College pupils; 9.30 to 10.30 a.m., Waikiwi and Waihopai schools; 10.30 to 11.30, North school; 11.30 to 12.30, Middle school; 12.30 to 1 p.m., Technical College pupils; 1 to 2, general public coaching hour; 2 to 3, St. George school; 3.15 to 3.45, Marist secondary school boys; 3.45 to 4.15, Southland Girls’ High School; 4.45 to 5.45, children, with centre instructors; 7.45, Southland junior and intermediate championships. The instructors for today are:—Diving A. Branks; freestyle swimming, P. Malthus, G. Asher, D C. Berry, C. Bates, E. C. Marshall, Misses Y. Webb and A. Macdonald; backstroke, Miss D. Mulvey and D. Davis; breaststroke, W. Miller, A. Poole, B. Palmer and G. Messrs A. McGrath and J. Kirkland will be in charge of the instructors.
