A special half-dollar coin has been minted in the United States to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the English settlement at Roanoki Island, North Carolina, the first English colony in America. The observe bears the effigy of Sir Walter Raleigh, who financed and directed the colonization. On the reserve side appear figures of Eleanor Dare and her daughter, Virfinia, the first child of English parents to be born in North America.
