TAPANUI CONCERT

The Tapanui Brownie Pack and Guide Company held a concert in aid of their funds recently. The district commissioner (Mrs W. R. Quin) presided and a good programme .was presented as follows:—Song, guides and brownies; fairy ring and brownie welcome; “Squeaky Shoes,” Miss Diane Watson; Dutch duo, Misses Alison and Joan Brooker; Station LFA, Miss June Arnold; nursery rhymes, brownies in costume; fairy ring, six little fairies in costume; recitation, Miss Joyce Crawford; Shirley Temple songs, brownies; tap and skipping rope dance, Miss Alison Brooker; “Big Bad Wolf,” brownies; “Tip Tap Toe,” Miss Diane W.atson; Maori songs, brownies; pianoforte duet, Guides K. Tanner and P. Pringle; old English country dance, Guides S. Sutherland, J. Wylie, H. and M. Grace; playette, “Dear Friends,” Guides S. Harrison, P. Pringle, V. Mercer; Irish song (in costume), guides; songs, Miss Ruth Sim; wand exercise, two country dances, vocal items, and , guides’ drill; recitation, Miss V. Mercer; guides’ chorus (in uniform). Mrs Brooker and Mrs Grace were the accompanistes. FAREWELL Mr and Mrs J. F. McLay were given a farewell in the Heriot Public Hall recently. Dancing occupied the evening to music supplied by Mr J. Rodger. Songs were sung at intervals by Misses V. Black and G. Sim. The chairman, Mr G. Richards, read several apologies for absence, and a letter from the president of the Bowling Club expressing the appreciation of the club of Mr McLay’s services. Mr Richards said Mr McLay had been a resident of Heriot for 25 years and as a citizen and also in a business capacity was much esteemed. Mr Richards then presented Mr and Mrs McLay with a chiming clock suitably inscribed. Mr R. F. Sim spoke for the business community, Mr W. H. Lusk for the farmers, and Mr P. Boylen for the sporting bodies. Mr McLay replied. HERIOT WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

At the November meeting of the Heriot Women’s Institute, Mrs Haugh gave a report on the South Otago meeting of delegates at Owaka. Mrs J. Adam (Crookston) gave a demonstration on making articles out of pine needles and raffia. Mrs King gave a recitation. Miss T. Black won the competition for best duchess set. In the shoe trees competition, Miss I. Paterson’s entry was placed first. Mrs Morrow won the best bloom competition.
