MATAURA CRICKET

SUCCESS OF CLUB TEAMS The Mataura Club scored two decisive wins on Saturday, the A team defeating Pukerau, at Pukerau, by 217 runs for five wickets declared, to 54 runs, and the junior team beating Celtic B. A feature of the senior match was the excellent batting of two colts, Armitage and Johnstone, both of whom scored over 50 not out. Leitch contributed a useful 55. Mataura’s total was compiled in two hours. For Pukerau, Sharp took three wickets for 39 runs, and bowling for Mataura Mac Gibbon took two wickets for one run. In the junior match against Celtic B at Mataura, the home team made 268 for nine wickets, S. English 132 retired, contributing almost half of the total. He hit six 6’s and fourteen 4’s. Coster also batted well to score 47. Celtic B scored 66. Bowling for Mataura, Barclay took eight wickets for 32 runs. Results:—

ATHLETIC SOCIETY At a meeting of the Mataura Athletic Society the appointments of Messrs J. Watt (Makarewa) and A. S. Duncan (Tapanui), as judges of dancing and piping respectively, for the Mataura sports were confirmed. It was decided to award a third prize in each of the dancing events, the prizes having been donated by Mr Watt Messrs T. Ryan and A. McKay were elected judges of the wrestling, and two wrestling contests one of 11 stone and under and one open, were added to the programme. The secretary reported that entries had been received from Christchurch and Wellington and there ( was every indication that the coming season would be a record one for the Southland sports circuit. Because of the prospect of big entries and a more extensive programme, it was resolved to request the Railway Department to delay north and south trains until 6 p.m. on the day of the meeting. LODGE MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the M.U., I. was presided over by N.G. Bro. F. Richardson, who welcomed a party from Gore. After opening the meeting, the lodge was handed over to N.G. Bro. L. Sim to proceed with the installation of officers as follows: —G.M., Bro. F. Richardson; N.G., Bro. A. McKinnell; V.G., Bro. D. A. Bell; elective secretary, Bro. G. Gordon; warden, Bro. J. Reid; guardian, Bro. S. Brown. A social hour followed, items being given by P.G. Bro. T. H. Butler, P.P.G.M. Bro. John Henry, and P.G. Bro. D. Russell. In the juvenile lodge N.G. Bro. F. TENNIS Because of counter attractions at Tuturau, the Mataura B grade team did not field a full team in its match against St. Andrew’s at Mataura on Saturday. Several of the games were unfinished, and at the close of play St. Andrew’s won by nine sets to two. RESIGNATIOI’ OF PIPE-MAJOR A meeting of the Mataura Pipe Band committee was held to appoint a pipemajor to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of the pipe-major, Mr W. Budge, who leaves shortly to take up residence in Wanganui. Mr William

Richmond was promoted to pipe-major, Mr B. Ashby to sergeant, and Mr J. Sutherland to corporal. EUCHRE The weekly euchre evening run by the Mataura Volunteer Fire Brigade was well attended. The winners were: Women, Mrs N. McLeod; men, Mr J. R. Clarke. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs Renshaw and Mr A. McKay. The prizes were given by Mr J. H. Clark. BOWLS Recently eight rinks from the Hokonui Club journeyed to Mataura and played a friendly match with the Mataura Club. The visitors won by 144 points to 114.
