GORE CRICKET

GOKE A BEATS CELTIC The conditions were good for the continuation of the Eastern Southland cricket competition matches on Saturday. The outfields were in splendid order and some high scores were registered. Results are as follows: — GORE AV. CELTIC The two leading teams in the competition, Gore A and Celtic, met for the first time this season on the hostel grounds on Saturday. The match was won easily by Gore by a margin of 140 rims. This came as rather a surprise, as although Celtic was without the services of its two opening batsmen, Henderson and D unnet, it was not expected that the side would be so soundly beaten. Celtic was first to bat and started badly, Logan being dismissed in the first over by Martin for a “duck.” Martin soon showed that he was in good form and took Southern’s wicket in his second over, the latter having scored only three runs. With two wickets down for three runs, the position did not look very bright for Celtic, and it -did not improve when Martin dismissed Mallon with the first ball of his fourth over and got Taylor caught out from his third ball. Martin continued to be dangerous and after bowling a maiden over he dismissed Anderson in his sixth over. With five wickets down for 14 runs and the best of Celtics batsmen out it appeared that the whole side would be out for less than 30. Shepherd, McCartney and Agnew aL managed to reach double figures, however, and there were 67 runs on the board when the last man, Lawry, was brilliantly caught by Adair. Martins bowling figures were: nine overs, two maidens, five wickets, 23 runs. L. Barron and Currie opened for Gore and started quietly. This pair carried the score to 23 before Currie was run out, after scoring seven runs. Barron was out when the score stood it 31, after scoring a neat 23. A splendid partnership took place between Kerr and Macara and this pair put on over a hundred runs for a third-wicket stand. Macara scored 67 runs, ana batted very soundly. Kerr retired after scoring 37. R. Campbell also made a useful knock, compiling 23. Agnew was the most successful Celtic bowler, taking five wickets for 58 runs.
