OTAGO SECURES FIRST WIN

Success At London Dairy Show FORMER MANAGER AT BROWNS SOUTHLAND FILLS NEXT NINE PLACES After four consecutive successes in the Empire competition at the British Dairy Farmers’ Show at Islington, London, Southland cheese makers were beaten at this year’s show, but the Otago cheese maker who secured first award received his training in Southland and only about a year ago accepted the managership of the Goodwood factory, which secured the championship. The next nine awards went to Southland factories. The cheese awards, according to a United Press Association cable, were as follows:— Goodwood (Otago) 1 Lochiel (Southland) 2 Brydone (Southland) 3 Thornbury (Southland) 4 Pahia (Southland) h.c. Wrights Bush (Southland) h.c. Aparima (Southland) h.c. Pukerau (Southland) h.c. Titiroa (Southland) c. Fairfax (Southland) c. Australian factories won the butter awards, '.u both the salted and unsalted sections. Since the start of the competition Southland has enjoyed remarkable success in the cheese section. The first London Dairy Show was held in 1927, and of the 11 championships awarded, eight have come to Southland, and in the three years that the premier award has gone elsewhere Southland factories have secured second and third positions. Strong competition came from the Downs factory (Queensland) in four seasons from 1931, but the leadership of Southland was unchallenged in 1935 and 1936. SUCCESSFUL MANAGER The manager of the Goodwood factory is Mr J. Parrish, who went to Otago last year from the Browns factory, where he was manager for a time, following a period as first assistant at Wrights Bush. Mr P. Barclay, manager of the Lochiel factory, which filled second place, has been manager of the factory for two seasons following a period at Otamita. This is the first season in operation of the new factory recently erected at Lochiel. Mr W. Weyth has been manager at Brydone for a number of years. The manager of the Thornbury factory, which was placed fourth, is Mr R. Cameron, winner of the Bledisloe Cup and other cheese-making successes. The manager at Pahia last year was Mr S. Morrison, who is now manager at Woodlands. Mr L. McPhee, manager of the Aparima factory, is spending his first season at the factory after a number of years at Titiroa. The managers of the other factories mentioned in the awards are Messrs R. J. Haggart (Pukerau). A. Syme (Titiroa) and W. G. Gaitt (Fairfax). The cheese championship carries with it a silver challenge cup given by Lord Bledisloe for the factory with the highest points from any part of the Empire and a challenge cup for New Zealand factories, also presented for competition by Lord Bledisloe. Southland won both trophies during the first four years of competition. The tabulated results of the championship since it was started illustrate Southland’s supremacy in cheese making:— 1927 Edendale (Southland) 1 W. C.
