INSPECTION OF LEANDER

BIG CROWDS VISIT CRUISER CAPTAIN RETURNS OFFICIAL CALL H.M.S. Leander, which is paying a three-day visit to Bluff, was open for public inspection yesterday and a big number of persons from Bluff and Invercargill took advantage of the opportunity to inspect the modern cruiser. Cricket matches were provided for members of the crew at Bluff and Invercargill and the captain and officers were entertained at luncheon by the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association.

Captain J. W. Rivett-Carnac, D.S.C., accompanied by Commander H. V. P. McClintock and Engineer-Commander F. W. Jones, called at the City Council office at noon yesterday to return the official call of the Mayor (Mr John Miller) to the warship on Tuesday afternoon. The party was then taken for a motor drive to Queen’s Park. Captain Rivett-Carnac and a party of his officers were the guests at a luncheon held by the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association. The luncheon was attended by a good number of members. The president of the association (Mr J. Roderique) was chairman and the Mayor (Mr John Miller) was present. The officers attending the luncheon were Commander H. V. P. McClintock, Paymaster-Com-mander G. L. O. Davis, Surgeon-Com-mander J. J. Keevil, CommissionedGunner (T) E. Savage and Commis-sioned-Gunner A. J. Harvey. The chairman extended a welcome to the captain and his officers and the Mayor. In opening his talk Captain RivettCarnac reminded his listeners that today would be the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. After the long lapse of time it was still mainly by sea power that the safety of the Empire could be ensured. Britain had disarmed very considerably after the Great War but the fleet was now being rebuilt. The function of cruisers and other vessels attached to the New Zealand station was mainly to maintain communications. He hoped that New Zealand would be able in the event of a future conflict to make the same contribution to the defence of the Empire as in the Great War. Mr H. Mackenzie moved a vote oi thanks to Captain Rivett-Carnac for attending the luncheon and giving his short talk.

FRIENDLY CRICKET MATCH

DRAW WITH INVERCARGILL TEAM A friendly cricket match between an Invercargill team and a team from H.M.S. Leander was played at Queen’s Park yesterday afternoon, the result being a draw. The weather was ideal and a fair number of spectators was present. The visitors batted first and declared with five wickets down for 136. Cloete was top-scorer with a well-compiled 69 not out. Harris, who secured 31, assisted his captain in a partnership of 81 for the third wicket. Walters, with 16, was the only other member of the ship’s team to reach double figures. Of the Invercargill bowlers, Hamilton and Roberts were the only ones to trouble the visitors. When stumps were drawn at 6 o’clock, the Invercargill eleven, which included six High School boys, had scored 124 for eight wickets, the match ending in a draw. Swinney (20), Campbell (17) and Redpath (19) were the chief scorers, but “extras” headed the list with 33. McKenzie, Glover and Cloete bowled well for the ship’s team. The umpires were Messrs A.
