STEAMER SHAKEN BY EXPLOSION
SEVERAL OF CREW INJURED LONDON, September 14. The steamer Sydney Star has berthed in the Thames and the third engineer, Thomas Kenyon has been admitted to hospital with severe burns as a result of the explosion off Las Palmas on September 7. Six greasers were slightly burned. The explosion shook the ship and blew one man 10 feet into the air. Some of the crew first thought the vessel had been torpedoed. It took an hour to subdue the fire.
In an explosion oft Las Palmas in the engine room of the Sydney Star, bound from Australia for London, an engineer, Mr Mawdsley, was fatally injured. The explosion was in the port engine, which blew out the engine-room door.
