MANAWATU WINS THE STEEPLECHASE ROYAL FEAST SCORES (United Press Association) HASTINGS, June 17., The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Clubs winter meeting commenced today in fine weather following a day’s rain. The course was in rather good order ana the attendance was large. In most of the races the finishes were close. The totalizator investments were £6970 compared with £4317 10/- or the first day last year, an increase 01 £2652 10/-. Results: — MAIDEN PLATE, £B5. Six furlongs. 3 Shani, 8.7 (A. Gilmore) 1 2 Joe Louis, 8.7 (R. Marsh) 2 9 Cletrac, 8.7 (P. Atkins) Also started: 6 Wiritanga, 8.7, 15 Defend 8.7, 17 Oha 8.7, 12 Clavercourt 8.7, 11 Tommy Atkins 8.7, 8 Seacourt B.C 7 Seattle 8.7, 10 Mon Ace 8.7, 14 Panerua 8.7, 13 Marching On 8.7, 4 Girl Pat 8.7, 1 Star Lad 8.7, 16 Fundy Bay 8.7, 5 Jacynth 8.7 and Thala 8.7 (bracketed). . t Jacynth and Clavercourt were Jett and took no part in the race. Marching On got squeezed out and was a long way in the rear. Tommy Atkins, Wiritanga, Shani and Cletrac were the leading division most of the way. Sham took the lead entering the straight, followed by Joe Louis. Won by three-quarters of a length, third three lengths away, Wiritanga fourth. Tommy Atkins was fifth. Time 1.10 3-5. High Grader led from the start followed by Unexpected, Begorrah, Kentucky Song, Contact and Blue Tiger. Nearing the straight Kentucky Song and Contact moved up to third and fourth with Blue Tiger following. High Grader was done at the home bend where Unexpected took the lead, retaining it in the run home. Won by three lengths, third a neck away. High Grader fourth. Time 2.51. CORINTHIAN PLATE, £lOO. One mile and a-half. t Tail Light, 11.13 (Mr K. Duncan) 1 3 Bothwell, 10.9 (Mr R. Russell) 2 5 Umpire, 10.10 (Mr S. B. Monteith) 3 Also started: 4 Pladie 12.8, 8 Mercian Prince 11.9, 2 Iddo 10.9, 7 Dusky Crown 10.9, 9 Ythan 11.7 (carried 141 b overweight), 6 True Shaft 10.7. i Bothwell led nearly all the way but was joined by Umpire three furlongs from home. Tail Light came fast in the straight and won pulling Up by three lengths, third half a length away, Iddo fourth. Time, 2.47. HAWKE’S BAY STEEPLECHASE, £2OO. About two miles and a-half. 2 Manawatu,-10.13 (A. McDonald) 1 I Riotous, 10.10 (W. McDowell) 2 5 Cotsfield, 9.10 (G. McGovern) 3 Also started: 4 Dozie 10.0, 3 Wykemist 9.7, 6 Padnos 9.0, 7 Mitzi 9.0. Mitzi was first to show out followed by Cotsfield, Manawatu, Riotous, Wykemist, Padnos and Dozie. Mitzi came down at the second of the stand double, Padnos losing his rider at the same obstacle. Cotsfield was then left with the lead, Manawatu, Wykemist, Riotous, Dozie being the order of the others. Six furlongs from home Wykemist went up to Cotsfield and soon had the latter’s measure. Coming to the last fence but one Wykemist had a lead of four lengths, but baulked, giving Cotsfield the lead again, the others closing up. Cotsfield was first over the last fence, but Manawatu and Riotous wore horn down, the former winning by half a length, three-quarters of a length between second and third, Dozie fourth. Time, 5.13. WINTER {HANDICAP, £lOO. One mile. 4 Royal Feast, 8.8 (B. H. Morris) 1 3 Trailer, 9.5 (R. Marsh) 2 5 Silent Acre, 8.0. (G. Tattersail) 3 Also started: 6 Lucullus Lad 10.4, 2 Hamarin 9.1, 1 Terry 8.12, 8 Agog 8.0, 7 Hunting Tartan 8.0, 10 Tupai 8.0, 9 Golden Time 8.0. Golden Time led from Royal Feast, Lucullus Lad and Silent Acre. Royal Feast joined issue with Golden Time three furlongs from the post but Trailer, Silent Acre and Terry were all coming fast. A great race to the post saw Royal Feast win by a length from Trailer with a head to Silent Acre and half a head to Terry who was fourth. Time, 1.45. CLIFTON HANDICAP, £lOO. Six and a-half furlongs. Liane, 8.5 (C. Goldsboro) 1 Marsyas, 8.0 (G. Tattersail) 2 Gladium, 8.2 3 Also started.—3 Fossicker 9.7, 1 Joviality 9.5, 6 Royal Minstrel 8.13, 8 Buster Brown 8.9, 7 Paul Robeson 8.4, 13 Blue Shirt 8.4, 12 Trackman 8.3, 11 Le Torquet 8.0, 4 Helios 8.0, 5 Perfect Lady 8.0, 14 Clavercoux-t 8.0. Joviality led out at the start with Perfect Lady next. / Trackman, Royal Minstrel, Paul Robeson and Fossicker were handy entering the straight. The field then closed up. Joviality gave way half-way down the straight when Marsyas and Gladium came through, but Liane came on the scene with a fast run on the outside and headed the leaders, winning by a length, a neck between second and third with Fossicker fourth. Time, 1.24.
