LAND PURCHASE FOR HOUSING
TRUSTEES SAY “NOTHING , TO REPORT” When invited to comment on the statement of the Under-Secretary for Housing (Mr J. A. Lee) that a portion of the estate of the late J. T. Thomson was to be acquired under the Public Works Act for housing, the Mayor of Invercargill (Mr John Miller) stated yesterday that he had no desire to discuss the matter at present. The council had agreed at its last meeting to instruct the town clerk to make inquiries into the cost of purchasing the area as an addition to the Turnbull Thomson Park. This action had been taken on the recommendation of the Reserves Committee, but it did . not necessarily imply that the council intended to purchase the land. A meeting of the trustees of the estate was held yesterday, but when inquiries were made later to ascertain if they had reached any decision on the sale of the land to the Government, it was stated that “there was nothing to report.”
