RUSSIAN BALLET
WHY INVERCARGILL WAS OMITTED NOT SUFFICIENT TIME The Russian Ballet, which opens a season in Dunedin on Saturday night, is not coming to Invercargill because the company has to catch the Awatea at Wellington on May 4 and it will not have time to come further south. Had the Awatea been sailing, as previously, later in the week Invercargill would have been included in the itinerary of the Ballet. This information was given to The Southland Times last night by Mr H. Stringer, representative in New Zealand for J. C. Williamson, Ltd., who was communicated with by telephone ■at Wellington. The letter sent by the Mayor (Mr John Miller) to J. C. Williamson, Ltd., drawing attention to the fact that Invercargill had been omitted from the itinerary had not been received by Mr Stringer last night, but he made it clear that Invercargill had been omitted for no other reason than that given. Mr Stringer emphasized that the company had to return to Australia on May 4 and it was impossible to give a performance in the time between the final night at Dunedin and the sailing of the Awatea.
