PLASTERERS’ AWARD
THE MAIN PROVISIONS The new award for plasterers in Otago and Southland provides for a 40-hour week to be worked on five days and the following minimum rates of pay:— Journeymen plasterers, 2/7| an hour. Journeymen fibrous plasterers, 2/6 an hour. Fibrous-plaster caster and wall-board makers, 2/3 an hour. Boys and youths may be employed to assist at fibrous-plaster casting at the following rates: Under 17, 17/6 a week for the first six months and 22/6 for the second six months; 17 to 18, 27/6 and 32/6, 18 to 19, 40/-; 19 to 20, 50/-; 20 to 21, 60/-; thereafter at adult rates. A clause dealing with suburban work states that work done elsewhere than at the shop of the employer and over two miles by the nearest convenient mode of access from the post office in arty town shall be considered suburban work. Men employed on such work are either to proceed to and from it or be conveyed to and from it beyond the two miles at the expense of the employer. Time reasonably occupied by the workers in travelling or time occupied in conveying workers to and from work beyond two miles is to be allowed and paid for. Walking time is to be computed at the rate of three miles an hour. Workers employed on suburban work are to be refunded any sum in excess of 2/- a week expended by them in travelling. It will be a breach of the award for an employer to sub-let any work within the scope of the award on a labouronly basis, and any worker taking work on a labour-only basis will be guilty of a breach of the award. Provision is made for payment for time occupied in travelling to country work. The award, which is now in force, operates throughout the Otago and Southland industrial district.
