Plan to Clear Madrid Streets LOYALIST RESISTANCE STIFFENING OFFICE WORKERS DIG TRENCHES (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 11.35 p.m.) London, October 20. The special correspondent of The Daily Telegraph with the Spanish insurgents says that General Franco, the rebel leader, has mobilized a great number of tanks, with which he intends to clear the streets of Madrid when he enters the capital. The President (Dr Manuel Azana) and four Cabinet Ministers have arrived at Barcelona from Madrid. The rebel advance is stiffening the Government’s resistance, and reinforcements in lorries laden with munitions and sandbags have been sent hastily up to the front lines. Large numbers of civil servants and other office workers spent Sunday digging trenches, in a belated attempt to strengthen the defences of the capital. The Government believes that the war wil still be lengthy, and is preparing for a winter campaign. COMMERCIAL ATTACHE RESIGNS “SPAIN’S FUTURE IN HANDS OF FRANCO.” (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) Washington, Oct. 19. Senor Terasa, commercial attache at the Spanish Embassy, has resigned, believing, although he is a Liberal himself. that Spain’s future is in the hands of General Franco, the rebel leader. RUSSIAN PROVISIONS FOR MADRID WOMEN USE PINS IN QUEUES AT BARCELONA. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Madrid, October 19. Amid cheers for the Soviet, the Russian steamer Neva arrived at Alicante with nearly 3000 tons of provisions for Madrid. All male citizens in Barcelona were mobilized, the women in the food queues creating riots by pinching and sticking pins into those preceding them. BRITISH LABOUR PARTY PERTURBED SESSION OF PARLIAMENT URGED. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, October 19. The Leader of the Labour Opposition (Major C. R. Attlee) has sent a letter to the Prime Minister (Mr Stanley Baldwin) on behalf of the Opposition, asking for the immediate summoning of Parliament in view of the gravity of the situation in Spain arising from violation of the agreement on nonintervention.
