THE TRAM FARES

DROP IN REVENUE PREDICTED A prediction that the revenue from tram fares would show an appreciable drop in the near future was made at the council meeting last evening by Cr A. W. Jones. He criticized the decision of the Trading Committee in sponsoring the increase recently put into operation, and said that with the approaching fine weather the trams would suffer still further. He asked that the Trading Committee bring down a report of the revenue from fares since the increase was brought into force. “I am quite satisfied that we will see a drop in the revenue, even though the weather has been bad and more or less forced the people to use the trams, ’ he said. Many people he knew had dropped the trams altogether since the fares were increased. Most of them had bought bicycles. It was a good thing for the bicycle trade, and when the good weather came along the council would see the effects of the alteration. He hoped the committee would reconsider the fares. They would probably be compelled to review them when they saw the reduced revenue. Cr W. ■G. Tait, for the committee, said he would see that the report was forthcoming.
