PROTECTED BY A BEAR

PROSPECTOR’S AMAZING EXPERIENCE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 11.40 p.m.) Burnslake (British Columbia), Oct. 19. Arthur Gammon, a prospector, is in hospital here after two gruelling weeks of dragging himself through the wilderness with a broken leg. Recounting an amazing experience, Gammon said that on the sixth day he sought shelter from a snowstorm in a cave. He discovered that the cave was occupied by a yearling black bear which made no move. After several days of semi-consciousness, Gammon continued on his way, followed by the bear. On the tenth night he lapsed into unconsciousness; he woke up, and discovered the bear protecting him against a pack of coyotes. Gammon was found exhausted yesterday by another prospector.
