SEVERE ’QUAKE IN ITALY
23 KILLED AND MANY INJURED VENICE ROCKED FOR 12 SECONDS (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) Rome, October 18. Twenty-three people were killed and many injured in an earthquake in the neighbourhood of Udine. Fifteen of those dead were trapped while sleeping in houses which collapsed at Caneya de Sacile. There was another victim at Conegliano, where an ancient castle was shaken dowp. Fifteen were injured in Venice, where old houses fell. The Rome correspondent of The Daily Mail says that the earthquake occurred at 4.11 a.m. It was particularly severe throughout the Venetian province. Venice rocked for 12 seconds, and there were wild scenes of panic as the inhabitants, half-clad, fled _ from their homes; many, terror-stricken, plunged into the canals. St. Mark’s Cathedral, the Doge’s Palace and other show places are believed to be undamaged. The shocks extended throughout the greater part of northern Italy, and many historic buildings were damaged. A second shock, lasting four seconds, rocked the Belluna and Udine provinces at 10.15 p.m., but no casualties are reported.
