Fifty Years Ago To-day

(From The Southland Times.)

SEPTEMBER 22, 1886.

All Aboard for Big Bay.—Captain Fairchild, of the Government s.s. Hinemoa, took advantage of a temporary lull in the strong wind which has been blowing from the westward for three or four days and sailed for Big Bay at 10 a.m. yesterday. Although it was raining heavily at the time of the vessel’s departure quite a number of residents and others were on the wharf to see the prospectors off. As the Hinemoa steamed from her berth those on board gave three cheers which were warmly responded to by the group on the wharf. The steamer should reach Big Bay this afternoon if the wind is not too strong.

New Subject for a Strike.—A novel strike has been organized in Lithgow, N.S.W. The local publicans have refused to reduce the price qf beer to threepence, so the miners have formed themselves into a Threepenny Beer Union. A severe struggle is anticipated. Sculling Championship—London, September 18: The sculling match for the championship of the world and £5OO a-side between Beach and Gaudaur (the American) was rowed to-day on the Thames, and resulted in a victory for Beach by three lengths. Letters from Home.—The ’Frisco mail is up to date this month, having arrived in the colony well within contract time. The southern portion will reach Invercargill by express this evening and a general delivery of correspondence will take place over the counter between 6.30 and 8 p.m.
