CAR STRUCK BY TRAIN
MANDEVILLE CROSSING THE DRIVER INJURED The driver and a passenger in a motor car, Matthew Hamilton and John Marr, both of Gore, narrowly escaped serious injury when the car, of which Hamilton was the driver, was struck by the mixed train from Gore at the Mandeville crossing about 5 o’clock last evening. The two men were returning to Gore from Pyramid in a touring car with the side-curtains up when the accident occurred. They met another car just before the crossing and did not hear the engine whistle. Their car was on the crossing before Hamilton saw the train on his right. Realizing it was too late to stop, he endeavoured to clear the line. The attempt almost succeeded, but the engine struck the car about the back wheel.
The car was thrown clear of the line on to some posts beside the road. Marr, who was sitting beside the driver, escaped without injury, but Hamilton was less fortunate. He received a scalp wound and was badly shaken. Dr J. E. Rogers, of Gore, was summoned and Hamilton was taken to the Gore Hospital, where he received medical attention. It was reported last night that his condition was not serious.
