SHOT BY BANDITS

FATE OF BRITISH SUBJECT.

FURTHER PARTICULARS.

(United Press Assn. —Telegraph Copyright.) London, August 18.

The Kalgan correspondent of the Daily Telegraph revealed that the bandits, riding with Mr Gareth Jones in their midst near Paochang, were hard pressed by the police _ when Mr Jones, exhausted and emaciated, signalled to his captors that he was unable to proceed. He fell from the saddle and the bandits shot him while he was lying on the ground and galloped off. The police overtook them and opened fire, killing one and capturing another, who supplied the details of Jones’s murder. The Chinese authorities kept the news secret for four days, although the British attache was urgently seeking facilities to enter the bandit area.
