THE BREN GUN
USE IN SOUTH AFRICA. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Pretoria, August 17. The Government is rearming the defence force with the Bren gun. A number have already been obtained for training purposes. The British Army’s Lewis gun is to be replaced by a Czechoslovakian light machine-gun. The new weapon will be manufactured at the Royal small arms factory at Enfield. The gun is named the Bren, ft can be used on a bipod or tripod, or from the shoulder. Its calibre is .303, and it weighs with a bipod 211 b, or 61b less than the Lewis gun. It fires 550 rounds a minute and is operated by gas pressure. It jams less than the Lewis gun, and also is suitable for cavalry.
