AUSTRALIANS WIN ENGLISHMEN BEATEN IN DOUBLES ' CRAWFORD’S SUCCESS (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) London, July 20. The tennis match, played on Davis Cup lines, between England and Australia was concluded to-day at Eastbourne, Australia winning by three matches to one, one single not being finished. The remaining matches resulted as follows:— Doubles. A. K. Quist and D. P. Turnbull (Australia) defeated G. P. Hughes and C. R. D. Tuckey (England) 3—6, 6 —3, B—6, 6—4. Singles. J. H. Crawford defeated H. W. Austin (England), 6—2, 6—4, 3—6, 6—3. F. J. Perry (England v. V. B. McGrath (Australia) 2—6, 6—2, 3—l (abandoned on account of rain). Turnbull was the best of the four in the doubles and served and smashed with savage accuracy. The Australians generally were superior in volleying and smashing. Tuckey, England’s new Davis Cup recruit, is playing much better with experience. He is serving powerfully and his ground strokes have improved. Full of confidence after defeating Perry, Crawford drove deeply and powerfully, served well and volleyed more often than usual. Altogether he overshadowed the Englishman’s stylish but less virile game. Perry and McGrath fought at a great pace. McGrath in the first set hammered backhand drives straight down the line with remarkable accuracy, but Perry, intensifying his boisterous belligerence, overwhelmingly won the second set. Hopman, writing in the Sun on tennis subjects, says that the Australians’ tour has been a financial success and the profits without the Eastbourne match, where most of the seats have been sold, should approach £2OOO. The New Zealand tie yielded £lOO, the French £2500 and the German £9OO. DAVIS CUP INTER-ZONE FINAL. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) London, July 20. The inter-zone final of the Davis Cup competition between the United States and Germany was commenced at Wimbledon to-day. D. Budge (U.S.A.) defeated H. Henkel (Germany), 7—5 11—9, 6—B, 6—l. It was a rather tame encounter, Henkel playing a defensive game throughout. Budge made many errors through impatience. Rain caused a postponement of the von Cramm —Allison match.
