AMERICAN UNEMPLOYED
HARVESTING WORK REFUSED.
DOLE PAYMENTS STOPPED. /
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) New York, July 20. A message from Desmoines (Iowa) states that to meet the labour shortage in the wheat fields with the harvest season reaching its height, relief headquarters in sixteen counties stopped dole payments to force the unemployed to accept work at the prevailing pay ,of two dollars a day with “keep.” Planters are complaining bitterly that most of the normal labour supply is now on relief and that the majority refuse to accept work at comparable rates. State governors throughout the wheat belt are preparing to take drastic action to force the unemployed to accept work unless the Federal Government intervenes.
