MINISTERIAL. The Hon. R. Masters, Leader of the Legislative Council and Minister of Industries and Commerce, will arrive in Invercargill about mid-day to-morrow. He will pay a visit to Winton on Wednesday and to Gore on Thursday on his way north. Though his visit is more of a private than a public nature, Mr Masters has advised Mr Jam s Hargest, M.P., that he is prepared to receive deputations at Invercargill oi. Wednesday morning. The Minister will be accompanied by Mrs Masters. His Worship the Mayor (Mr John Miller) on Saturday received a telegram from Mr Masters informing him of his visit.

Sir Robert Anderson travelled north by the express last evening. Mr H. Hinchcliff, of Wellington, who judged the dogs at the Southland Kennel Club’s Show, will return north to-day. Mr I. D. Jack left by car on Saturday morning for Christchurch, where he will relieve the district solicitor of the Public Trust Office. A Press Association message from London states that Mr F. L. Macdougall has been elected chairman of the Imperial Economic Committee.

Mr 11. F. Norman, passenger manager- of the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd., arrived in Invercargill by Saturday night’s express from Dunedin.

. A Wellington telegram announces the death of Mr William Alfred Perry, a member of one of the pioneer families of Petone and an expert horticulturist.

Mr J. Hannay, of the Bank of New Zealand staff, who was about twelve months ago transferred from Invercargill to the Tapanui branch, has been transferred back to Invercargill.

Mr George Wilkinson, of the Justice Department, Wellington, arrived in Invercargill by the express on Saturday night to take up a position on the clerical staff of the Borstal Institution.

Mr A. S. Froggatt, president of the Southland Building Society, travelled north by the express last evening. His ultimate destination is Wellington, which he will visit on Building Society business, but ho will break his journey at Timaru and Christchurch.

The Rev. J. R. Blanchard, of St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Wellington, president of the New Zealand Alliance, and Mr J. Malt Murray, Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, reached Invercargill by the express on Saturday evening. They will speak this evening in Victoria Hall under the auspices of the New Zealand Alliance. Yesterday morning Mr Murray preached at the North Invercargill Presbyterian Church and Mr Blanchard at the Central Methodist Church. In the evening Mr Murray preached at St. Peter’s Methodist Church and Mr Blanchard at St. Paul’s.

The China Inland Mission has accepted Dr. Hallum Howie, formerly of Maori Hill, Dunedin, but latterly of Auckland, and Mr Mellsop (lately preaching at a Baptist Church in Nelson) for service in China as foreign missionaries. Dr. Howie is well-known in Invercargill, where he was born and educated. He is a son of the late Mr John Howie, of Waikiwi. His mother now resides in Auckland. Alter leaving the Southland Boys’ High School Dr. Howie was for a time on the staff of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., Invercargill. He then went to Otago University, where h° graduated as a doctor.

Mr W. A. Piddington, manager of Messrs John Mill and Co., Timaru, who has been transferred to Bluff, has been the recipient of several presentations. Last Monday evening the employees of the firm gathered and Mr W. Gibb, who presided, presented Mr Piddington with a travelling toilet set for himself, a crystal rose bowl for Mrs Piddington and a gift for their son. Captain Rathbone and Mr F. Hay also referred I - Mr Piddington’s services to the firm during the past nine years and wished him success in his new appointment. Mr Piddington was also the recipient of a cheque from the Timaru clients of the firm.
