SOUTHLAND TALKIE
PRODUCTION ACTIVITIES. Several Southland people have had the thrill of being made-up for the movies, and their appearance before the microphone and camera gave definite promise of surprisingly good screen types. The latest make-up, which reached Mr Lee Hill only a fortnight after its initial release in Hollywood, is remarkable for the ease with which it is applied, and the rich yellowishbrown foundation, grey eye shade and brown lips were the subject of much comment by the favoured few present at the tests, which were taken in the garden of Mr J. W. Smith’s home in Hollywood Terrace. Mi- Hill has received advice from Mr Jack Welsh, the sound engineer, who is at present in Dunedin supervising the processing, that the negative quality is excellent, particularly that of the ploughing match recently held at Branxholme, also that of the movie premiere of “San Toy.” The results have satisfied him that the atmospheric conditions for photography in Southland are excellent.
Prior to going on location early next week to the Eglinton Valley, the production unit has accepted an invitation to the big Hollywood. Barn night at the de Luxe Skating Rink next Monday, and has requested permission to take a small footage of sound film there to include in its travel talk short of Invercargill. Several leading members of the cast will be present, including the juvenile lead, who is a keen skater.
An original screen story, written by Mr J. J. W. Pollard, has been accepted by the company and the scenario and dialogue are nearly completed. Until a fitting title has been selected, it will be known as “Production No. 1.”
