ASSOCIATION CODE CORINTHIANS DRAW WITH SOUTHERN Owing to Corinthians and Southern drawing on Saturday, the fate of the President’s Cup has not yet been decided, these teams being at the top of the list with five points each. At the Showgrounds Central beat Rovers and gained their first points for the cup. The table is as follows:— Corinthians ’ 5 4 Southern 5 Central 2 Rovers 0 SOUTHERN v. CORINTHIANS. The Southern v. Corinthians match was played under ideal overhead conditions but the playing area was in places very muddy. However, the large crowd of spectators present was treated to a good exhibition of the code and a draw, 2-all, was a fair reflex of the play. The teams were:—

Corinthians (light blue). —Devon, Reddington, Dymock, M. O’Rorke, McMurdo, D. Morrison, Heenan, Greenfield, J. Morrison, Anderson, L. O’Rorke. Southern (black)—Newman, Heyricks, H. Pay, D. Morrison, Kerr, Hobbs, Morton, McDonald, C. Pay, Frampton. Under ideal conditions, the game commenced at a fast pace. Dymock made a run and his centre was kicked behind by Reddington. From the goal kick, Morrison for Southern broke through, but his final shot was wide of the goal. It was obvious, even at this early stage of the game, that a good encounter would result. Dymock and Reddington were combining well with nice deft touches to each other. After ten minutes’ play honours were about equal. Hobbs was his old self, and repeatedly broke up likely passing movements. Contrary to expectations Southern’s forward line were going strong and Morrison had bad luck by first hitting the goal-post, and then having a good shot scrambled away. O’Rorke, at back, was defending well as also was his brother at centre-half. C. Pay was combining well with Morrison. From a breakaway by Heenan his cross went to Reddington who scored from an easy position after fifteen minutes’ play. Corinthians 1, Southern 0. Corinthians were now pressing and a shot at goal by Anderson just missed. C. Pay got moving and his pass to Morrison was obtained by the latter player at an awkward angle. However, he screwed in a shot which just rolled over the line. Corinthians 1, Southern Soon afterwards Heyricks crossed a shot well and from a scramble in front of Corinthians’ goal the ball went to C. Pay fairly well out. He timed a beautiful shot, which completely beat Greenfield. Southern 2, Corinthians 1. At this period Southern were having the best of matters, but the Corinthians’ defenders were working stubbornly. From a break by Heenan the ball travelled to Devon, whose good shot at goal was well saved by Morton. The pace of the game was a cracker, and play was very interesting. Heenan tried a shot at goal which went just wide. McMurdo was playing a good game, his powerful kicks relieving the danger on several occasions. Half-time came with the score: Southern 2, Corinthians 1. , i The second spell commenced at a last pace, the ball first being at one goal and then the other. Heyricks tried a long cross shot which just missed the goal. Devon, Reddington and Dymock were working hard for an equalizer, and on one occasion Reddington’s finishing shot just missed the goal. From a good corner kick taken by McMurdo, Heenan headed a beautiful goal, well out of the goalie’s reach: Southern 2, Corinthians 2. , • i Corinthians were, at this period, combining a little better than the Southern team, although there was very little between them. Both sides were going full out for a deciding goal and the spectators were on their toes with excitement. After a great run by Devon his final shot at goal hit the post and went behind. The pace was now slackening a little, which was no. surprising. Morrison, for Southern, had hard luck when he overran the ball when in front of goal. Heenan also had bad luck when his shot at goal ran right along the goal-mouth with no one to snap up the opportunity. Devon missed a golden chance when in front of goal, as also did Heenan. However, the ground in front of the goal was well churned up, which was a handicap for shooting. Hobbs tried a shot while the goalie was out of his charge and later a shot by Morrison hit the upright, but when time sounded with play round Corinthians’ goal the score was still:

Corinthians 2, Southern 2. Mr G. F. Gunn was referee.

BOYS’ BRIGADE CUP.

The Third Invercargill Boys’ Brigade Company, by beating the Second Company by 4 goals to 3, won the cup. The match at the South ground provided a good display. The Third Company s goals were all scored by Dawson, while the loser’s scorers were Wilson (2) and Denton (1). Mr T. Ferguson refereed. CENTRAL v. ROVERS. There was little interest in the Cen-tral-Rovers encounter at the Showgrounds. Rovers had a depleted side and were not at their best, with the result that Central had an easy win by 5 goals to nil. The teams were:— (Sfentral (red and white): Ferguson, Harvey, Adamson, Walsh, Batchelor, Muir, Bridgman, Stewart, Collins, Warnock’ Sparrow. Rovers (black and white): Bell, Sprange, Campbell, Dennis, Stevens, Riddell,. Fairweather, Crighton, O’Halloran. . , , The toss placed Rovers with the sun at their backs, but the gaps in their team prevented effective combination and Central were soon on attack. The Red and White forward line moved well and before half-time goals were registered by Collins (2), Warnock (2) and Stewart (1), making the score: Central 5, Rovers 0. In the second half Rovers were strengthened by the addition of two more juniors who’ played quite usefully. The game was opened up and became more even. Rover- had a fair share of the attacking, but missed, chances by poor shooting in front of the goal'. Central, however, did not penetrate successfully in the second spell and when the final whistle sounded the score was still: Central 5, Rovers 0. Mr E. D. Dyer refereed. JUNIOR GAMES. Again a promising standard with a big improvement in tacti :s was seen in the junior grade. Corinthians’ juniors defeated Rovers by 3 goals to nil. Corinthians: Murison, L. Insall, J, Watson, Radka, N. Morrison, P. Connors, Haggerty, Cooney, Waterson, Penman, Cameron. Rovers: Pedlar, Crighton, Dawson, G. Sprange, Hunt, Knuckey, Sim, Jones, Breayley. Bell, C. Sprange. Corinthians showed a good grasp of

positional play and by half-time had scored three goals, the successful shots coming from Morrison (2) ..nd Waterson (J). After half-time Rovers, who had been playing two short, filled the gap in then- team and were able to prevent Corinthians from increasing their lead. Mr A. Crighton refereed.
