WELFARE LEAGUE.

A meeting of the District Welfare League was held in Mr J. Green’s office on Monday. Present: Messrs J. Green (chairman), G. C. Macpherson, R. H. Matthews, J. L. Elder, W. Kelly, G. Watt, T. Campbell. The chairman reported that Mr J. Elder and himself had interviewed Mr G. Wittingham with a view to having the crossing at Mandeville raised. The secretary was instructed to order 100 trees to be planted around the cemetery and also to send a letter of appreciation to Mr D. McLennan thanking him for past services. The following committees were appointed: Hall, Messrs R. H. Matthews, G. Watt and L. Gee; cemetery, Messrs W. Kelly and R. H. Matthews; reserves and recreation ground, R. H. Matthews, J. Elder and T. Campbell. Plunket Meeting. The bi-monthly meeting of the Plunket Committee was held this week, the president (Mrs Denniston) presiding over a small attendance. It was decided to run a euchre tourney at the close of the hockey euchre tourney. The following results were handed in from the May appeal—Mesdames Denniston and Kerr (Wendon) £4 16/4; Mesdames Kelly and McKenzie (Riversdale) £2 18/6.* Further collections are still to be received. Afternoon tea concluded the meeting. The weekly euchre tourney in aid of the hockey club’s funds was held on Saturday night when a large number congregated to participate in the games. After several interesting games the winners proved to be Mrs Matthews and Mr J. McAuliffe, while Mrs Gee and Mr H. Tayles annexed second place. Mr F. Wicks then presented the aggregate prizes for the preceding eight nights. Miss C. Bone and Mr A. Henderson receiving these trophies. Four further nights will be held in aid of hockey funds. Supper was served and

a short dance held to music supplied by Messrs Cody, Green, Curry and Johnston. The prizes for the night’s play were donated by Miss A. Tayles and Mr W. Jones.
