ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

SOUTHLAND EXECUTIVE. ' FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. At the fortnightly meeting of the Southland Football Association, Mr G. Stables presided over Messrs Mclntyre, Walsh, Sparrow, Wilson, Marchant, Robertson, Kerr, Galbraith, O'Rorke, Morrison, O’Brien and Dyer (secretary). Correspondence was received from M. Stevens (Hedgehope) stating that the association code had been instituted at the Hedgehope School, thanking the association for the gift of a ball and requesting a book of rules.

The Hon. Adam Hamilton wrote jn connection with the proposed art union for the purpose of building up a fund for injured players.

In reference to the teams for this match, Mr J. McMurdo, a member of the Referees’ Association, stated that it might be advisable for a trial match to be played before the big game. Delegates stated that in their opinion such a course should be pursued in fairness to the young players. It was unfortunate that the trial match had been postponed owing to wet weather It was decided that the competition for the McDonald Cup be closed and that Corinthians be declared the winners; and that a trial game be held in the Showgrounds on Saturday week. The following draw for the President’s Cup competition was arranged, one round to commence on Saturday: Southern v. Rovers; Corinthians v. Central. The Southern-Rovers match is to be played on the south grounds and the Corinthians-Central match on the Showgrounds. . Mr Galbraith stated that the competition for the Boys’ Brigade teams had to be rearranged and the 3rd Boys’ Brigade would play the 2nd Boys’ Brigade on Saturday next. It was decided to grant the sth Boys’ Brigade a ball.

Mr Galbraith asked for a ruling on non-members of the Boys’ Brigade playing in the competition. Some of these non-players were over age, he said.

Mr Holden explained that the rules of the Boys’ Brigade were strict regarding the matter of age, and on the motion of Mr Wilson it was decided that all members playing in the Boys’ Brigade be bone fide members of the brigade.

The following referees were appointed for Saturday: Mr G. Gunn (Southern-Rovers), 2.30 p.m.; Mr McIntyre (Corinthians v. Central); Boys’ Brigade match (Mr Holden). The chairman requested clubs to expedite payment of affiliation fees due at the end of this month and asked delegates to refer the matter back to their clubs.

Mr Stables drew attention to the matter of preparation of the grounds. As the groundsman could not possibly attend to both grounds, it was necessary for assistance to be given by the clubs. It was decided that the association attend to the matter. / In connection with a player (J. McMurdo) who was placed on the cautioned list and whose case was referred to the New Zealand Council for a ruling, the appeal of the Corinthians Club being upheld, Mr O’Rorke moved: “That in view of the fact that the New Zealand Council had upheld the appeal of the Corinthians Club against the arbitrary methods used by the association in cautioning the player concerned, this association apologize to him, and that the referee and the player be requested to appear before the association at its next meeting.” The motion was carried. F. A. TROPHY MATCH. OTAGO TEAM TO MEET AUCKLAND. (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, June 17. The Otago soccer team to play Auckland for the F. A. Trophy at Auckland on June 29 is as follows: Goal: McDougall. Full-backs: Taylor and Anderson. Halves: Sutherland, Warnock (captain), and Sutherland. Forwards: McHugh, Smith, McCormack, Hooper, Dalziel and Skinner (one to be dropped).

WHIPPET RACING NIGHTCAPS NOTES. (By "Sonny Boy.”) Fullerton, after his performances at the last Nightcaps meeting, must be classed as one of the two or three best dogs in Southland. The owners, Sneddon and Pointon, have started Fullerton 28 times under the Southland Association for 15 wins, 5 seconds and 8 unplaced performances. E. Boyle purchased Gold Doll from G. Beissell before the latter left for Australia. Gold Doll is good on the flat or over hurdles, and E. Boyle should not be long in winning a stake with her. A. Foster’s Queen’s Own won the Nursery at Nightcaps and was running on well at the finish. The same young owner got second money in the same race with Dad’s Ruin, and it is evident that he has two good pups in the winner and runnerup. Sneddon and Pointon have mated Wallera with Some Guy and it will be interesting to watch the performances of the pups. E. Boyle is spelling Miss New Zealand for a month or so. His training operations are concentrated on Gold Dale and the puppy Pepperment. The wintry conditions prevailing lately have curtailed whippet training operations, but most of the dogs will come up fresh from their let up. The Nightcaps Club contemplates staging a Derby race for dogs 12 months and under. Such a race will attract the attention of owners, and breeders from all over Southland. Some Guy just went under by a head to his kennel mate Fullerton at the last local meeting. This last win places Fullerton on a mark where he will find it hard to give away, say, 10 yards to dogs of such calibre as Linton Lad, Havaspot. Some Guy, Friendship, Miss New Zealand and others. An instance of the expansion of whippet racing was the attendance from Winton of .the young woman owner, Miss Butler, with her dog Sail Home. Although beaten it was evident that she was not discouraged. The Boyle Cup race at Nightcaps saw some really good speed contests. Each heat was closely contested and the final was one to rouse enthusiasm It was a great pity Miss New Zealand was allowed by her slipper to anticipate the gun. She would have made the final even more interesting. Johnny Walker was showing up during the running of his heat, but petered out.

Havaspot looked all over a winner in the final race, but Miss New Zealand came at the right end to take the honours. Havaspot appeared to be just a little stale.

T. Taylor (Ohai), reports that his six months’ old puppy (Havaspot—Rita Mahru) is doing nicely and will probably get a start at the next - meeting. Gracie Fields, which raced so well for J. C. Purdue, has been retired to the stud. Havaspot is to be mated with her.

P. Johnston (Ohai) did not get the best of efforts from Linton Lad at the last Nightcaps meeting, A short let up may work wonders with this promising young dog.

Gordon Spowart is giving his two dogs, Walla Walla and Rouslie, plenty of running (after rabbits). It remains

to be seen if this is good training for whippets. Frank McSweny was just a bit unlucky at Ohai not to win the Campbell Cup with Autogiro. This dog, probably, the fastest whippet in Southland to-day, had the race won 10 yards from the line, but was evidently nosed out of the decision. Mr J. Duncan (Nightcaps), who takes a keen interest in whippets, has been appointed handicapper for the Southland Whippet Association. Mr Duncan informs me that there are 74 dogs registered under the Southland Association, so when owners start racing in the spring he will have a busy time placing them all on their respective marks. E. Dockerty has Camera and Max Baer on the easy list for some weeks. They are carrying a lot of weight at present, but this will soon come off and they should race early and well for their owner. The Southland Whippet Association has been in existence for a period of nine months and during that time clubs affiliated with it have distributed in stake money the sum of £167. GOLF QUEEN’S PARK LADIES CLUB. The following is the draw for a sealed hole match and a Scott Cup round to be played at Queen’s Park to-day commencing at 1 p.m.:— To start at Renown:—Miss Whyte v. fair attendance of members and some good steady shooting was witnessed. B. Broomfield with 78, plus 2, proved the winner. J. Buttolph and A. Wilson with the same score were . second and third, Broomfield winning on the count back. The following were the scores with handicaps:— Sc. Hdcp. Tl.
