STRANGE LOCALE
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. EMPTY SHOP. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 15. The Mount Eden Borough Council held a special meeting this morning in an empty room at the back of a jeweller’s shop in Symonds street, outside the borough’s boundaries. The estimates were adopted and rates struck for a year. There was not even a chair or a table and councillors stood with overcoats and hats on while one member protested against the proceedings as most undignified. The Mayor, Mr McNab, explained that when the council previously dealt with this business its resolutions had been invalid because there was an error in the notices of the meeting. Having formally passed the resolutions, though not without an attempt by the protesting member to defer matters until a proper meeting could be called in the Council Chamber, the councillors dispersed. The Mayor said the person who rang up the newspapers and said a secret meeting was going to be held should be ashamed of himself. The meeting was called to suit councillors going to work. <
