CARE OF BABIES
KARITANE-HUNT HOME.
COUNTRY GIRLS’ INSPECTION.
Yesterday morning the country girls who are at present having an education week in town under the auspices of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union visited the Karitane-Hunt Hospital, Waikiwi, when Matron Ingold addressed them on the work of the hospital and then conducted them on a tour of inspection. Before being shown over the hospital, the girls gathered on the verandah where the matron explained the various departments of the hospital to them and mentioned the items of particular interest. First they visited the milk dispensary where the babies’ feeds are made and where each bottle, which stands in a pan of water protected by fine gauze and placed in such a position as to allow a free current of air, is clearly labelled with its owner’s name. Next came the nursery where the babies are bathed and where the temperature is kept at a given warmth. The matron explained the actual bathing and weighing of the babies. The weakling ward was next inspected where the babies who are more delicate and ill are nursed. A basket containing a complete set of clothes for the baby was inspected as well as a partially made cot which illustrated the matron’s description of the making of the cot and of how the baby is put into it. The ward for premature babies was inspected from the glass door and the method of its heating was explained. Lastly the girls visited the balcony which has vita-glass windows to allow the ultra-violet rays of the sun which are so beneficial to health to penetrate into the room; here they saw the babies being fed prior to their morning sleep. Mrs J. Stewart, the provincial president, moved a vote of thanks to Matron Ingold.
