LYTTELTON SEAT
“BY-ELECTION A WASTE.” DEMOCRAT PARTY NOT TAKING PART. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 13. The following statement has been issued by Mr C. E. Davy on behalf of the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Democrat Political Organization : “Although the Democrat Party is definitely opposed to the socialistic policy of both the Nationalist and the Labour Party, the Democratic organization has no intention of contesting the Lyttelton by-election, for the following reasons: In view of the nearness of the general elections, we consider such a by-election a sheer waste of public money and it will serve no useful purpose. In our opinion a Labour candidate should be elected unopposed, for the above reason and, in addition, that his election would make no difference to the position of the parties in the House.
“We wish to state quite definitely, however, that we will contest the Lyttelton seat at the general election. It is our purpose to contest every constituency, and our candidates, including a candidate for Lyttelton, will be announced in due course.”
