OMANA AFLOAT
PULLED OFF BANK. NO SERIOUS DAMAGE. (Per United Press Association.) Greymouth, June 13. Stranded on a gravel bank in the Grey river since Sunday, the Union Company’s Omana was refloated this morning at 7.30. The unloading of timber commenced at 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon and another unsuccessful attempt to get the Omana off was made at 7 p.m. Unloading was then resumed till 6 o’clock this morning. With the Kalingo locked alongside the Omana, both were put at full speed astern, with heaving wires from the wharf and also the Kiwitea pulling from the Omana’s bow, but no impression was made for an hour. At 7 o’clock the Omana moved astern and then, almost immediately, came off, with the Kalingo still locked alongside. The Omana berthed at the wharf. Only minor damage to the superstructure resulted from the stranding, a windlass being broken, along with other slight damage. Watersiders are now re-loading the timber taken from the Omana and placed aboard the Kalingo. This is approximately 120,000 feet or 300 tons dead weight. The services of two divers brought from Wellington were not required and they left on their return to-day.
