RIVERSDALE NOTES

P.W.M.U. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the P.W.M.U. was held in the Wendon Church on Thursday afternoon, the president (Mrs A. McKay) presiding over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of a hymn and scripture reading. A motion of sympathy with Mrs G. Watt in her recent bereavement was passed. The subject for the day was 4< Our Missions in India,” portions of which were read by Mesdames M. McLay, R. White and W. White, which nroved very interesting and beneficial to members. The Wendon ladies provided afternoon tea at the close of the meeting.

On Thursday a pleasant evening was spent at the manse when some 30 young people of the Presbyterian choir and Bible class assembled to farewell one of their number. Games, competitions and community singing made the time pass all too quickly. Solos weie rendered by Miss Sheila Stevenson and Mr lan McKay and at a suitab e interval the Rev. J. Newlands on behaii of those present asked Mr Alan Campbell to accept a Rolls razor with best wishes for his future success. Mr Campbell has been a valued member of the choir and Bible Class and possessed of a fine bass voice has given his services most willingly in the choir and at all social functions. Messrs 1. McKay and G. Green (choirmaster) and Miss Stevenson endorsed Mr Newlands’ remarks, wishing the guest a pleasant time and promotion in his new sphere. Mr Campbell suitably responded. Mr T. Campbell also spoke .and thanked Mr and Mrs Newlands for the use of their home. The ladies provided supper and a happy evening was brought to a close with the singing ot “God be with you till we meet again. Mr Campbell left by Sunday evening s express for Invercargill where he will join the Railway Department. Oddfellows Ball.

The annual ball of the Loyal Riversdale Lodge M.U. 1.0.0. F., was held m the hall on Friday evening when a large crowd, drawn from all parts oi Southland, gathered to dance to the strains of the Regal Dance Band, lhe grand march was led by N.G. Bro. J. C. McKenzie and Miss R. Wallis (Gore) with local and visiting brothers following. The gay frocking of the ladies combined with the bright insignias of office of the lodge members made a very colourful scene, the hall being gaily decorated with coloured lights and papers and the floor having received special attention, made dancing a delight. Prior to the supper adjournment all members of the local and visiting Oddfellows numbering 60 took the floor and N.G. Bro. McKenzie welcomed the visitors on behalf of the local lodge. Responses were given by members 01 Loyal Lumsden, Balfour, Gore, Mataura, Hearts of Oak, St. George Shamrock, Rose and Thistle, Mount Wendon and Dipton Lodges. An excellent supper was served and dancing resumed till the early hours. Bros. L. Greer and J. Stevenson ably carried out the duties The weekly euchre in aid of the Hockey Club funds was held on Saturday night when despite counter-at-tractions about 60 players assembled. The winners of the play Proved to be Mrs P. Stevenson and Mr S. Kirkland, Mrs J. McMath and Mr T. Mortimer annexing second prizes. An excellent supper was served and a short dance was held to music supplied by Mrs Matthews and Messrs Green, Curry and social was tendered to Mr D. Lynch, postmaster, and Mr L, Kelly, of the staff, in the Drill Hall on Wednesday. Cards and) dancing occupied the major part of the evening. At a suitable interval Mr J. C. Macpherson stated that Mr D. Lynch had been appointed to the local Post Office seven vears ago. During that period he> himself a very efficient and obliging official, and always ready to, give information and assistance in ments connected with the Post Office. Mr L. Kelly joined the post office five

years ago and by diligence and perseverance passed the necessary examinations for promotion. The speaker then presented each guest with a wallet of notes as a token of the high esteem in which they were held throughout the district. Messrs C. Phillips, B. McCubbin and T. Campbell also spoke in eulogistic terms of the guests. The guests then suitably replied. Supper was handed round, after which dancing was continued till the early hours of the morning.
