THE LYTTELTON SEAT
A BY-ELECTION NECESSARY,
Although a general election is expected towards the end of this year, after the corning session -of Parliament, a by-election will be necessitated in the Lyttelton electorate by the death of Mrs E. R. McCombs. The Electoral Act provides that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, on being informed during a recess of the vacancy of a seat through death or resignation, shall issue a warrant to the clerk of writs forthwith directing him to issue a writ to fill the vacancy.,
The writ is forwarded to the returning officer for the district, and in it are stipulated the date on which nominations will be closed and the date of*polling. Nominations must be closed not less than 10 days or more than 17 days before polling day. tn the case of the last Lyttelton byelection, when the seat became vacant through the death of Mr James McCombs, the writ was issued on August 14, 1933, 12 days after Mr McCombs’s death. Nominations closed 14 days later, on August 28, and the election was held on September 13.
