BASKETBALL

SATURDAY’S GAMES WELL-CONTESTED MATCHES The Southland Basketball Association’s weekly competitions were continued on Saturday when some wellcontested games were played. Because of the wintry weather conditions the matches were played in the Drill Hail, and attracted a fair number of sp® c 7 tators. In the first grade section Kiwi were just too good for St. Mary s who were not quite up to the standard of their more experienced opponents. St. Mary’s, however, gave a fine performance, their work at times reaching a high standard. Collegiate won the other first grade match, defeating Makarewa after an exciting encounter by 18 goals to 15. Details of Saturday’s games are as follows:— FIRST GRADE. KIWI (12) v. ST. MARY’S (11.) Kiwi goaled first after some clever movements on the part of the forwards. St. Mary’s were also on the alert, and staged some very pretty passing bouts which were frustrated by the sound defence of Collegiate. Kiwi then swung into action, but found the opposition defenders difficult to pass. The defenders of the younger team were on their toes during both spells, and made some brilliant interceptions. At halftime Kiwi were leading by one goal, and during certain stages of the second half it was impossible to accurately forecast the winner of the match. Goals were scored by each side in quick succession, and in the closing stages both teams fought hard for supremacy. Right throughout St. Mary’s gave a splendid exhibition, and only the additional experience of the collegiate players saved the side from defeat. COLLEGIATE (18 v. MAKAREWA (15). Collegiate were early in Makarewa territory, but the defence was .stout. Makarewa soon had a turn at attack. The Collegiate defenders, however, were able to clear the ball before a goal had been scored. Both sides secured goals, and at half-time the score was 11—8 in favour of Collegiate. During the progress of the second half each combination made use of every opportunity offering, and some fine basketball was witnessed. Throughout the game the winners gave an exhibition of clean, crisp passing. Their defence and forward thirds also handled cleverly. Makarewa’s passing was of a high order. SECOND GRADE. KIWI (17) v. KENNINGTON (12). Kiwi were one player short in the defence third for the first half, and this fact gave the other side a decided advantage. In the second spell Kiwi gave a very improved showing and for a time dominated the play. Their passing work was swift and sure, a’ fact which largely contributed to their victory. Kennington also turned in a creditable display, their shooting being fairly accurate. The loser’s forwards worked hard, and gave a fine exhibition. BLUFF (16) v. WALLACETOWN (16). This was an excellent game, both teams giving displays of clever basketball. In the opening stages Wallacetown had many opportunities to score, but poor shooting prevented goals from being registered. At half-time the score was Bluff 5, Wallacetown 4. In the second spell the forwards of each team improved their shooting, and goals were scored in quick succession. The result, as a consequence, was in doubt right up to the final whistle. From every angle this match was one of the best second grade games seen in Invercargill this season. Every player was out to give of her best, and the result was a game of a very high order indeed. S.G.H.S. (16) v. COLLEGIATE B (6). Collegiate were leading by one goal early in the game, but the loss of one of their defenders, D. Symon, because of a sprained ankle, weakened the team, even though a substitute was found. High School were leading by 6 goals to 3 at half-time, and on the resumption of play swung into action with spirit. In the closing stages High School'practically had matters all their own way, and finished the match with a comfortable lead. COLLEGIATE A (19) v. RATA (13). In the opening stages it seemed as though both teams were evenly matched, but as the game progressed Collegiate settled down and secured'a good lead. The shooting of the winners was accurate, while their defenders gave a satisfactory exhibition. Rata’s passing was of a high order, but they failed to finish off many likely scoring movements. THIRD GRADE. H. AND J’s. (15) v. ST. MARY’S (8). This was a fairly even game till the second spell when the winners forged ahead and scored 10 goals. H. and J’s. passing was sound, while their defence gave the opposition many anxious moments. Many of St. Mary’s efforts were nullified by poor shooting.

MAKAREWA (19) v. ST. PETER’S (14).

, St. Peters’ were seriously weakened by having to play emergencies in the centre and forward thirds. This prevented the team from displaying true form. Makarewa were able to take advantage of this fact, and controlled most of the play. In the second half St. Peter’s gave a much beter exhibition and co-ordinated better in all sections. Makarewa were still’ too good, however, and ran out winners by a fair margin. COLLEGIATE (14) v. RATA (9). Collegiate were too good for Rata, who missed chances to goal through faulty handling. The centre and defence thirds of the winners were particularly strong. The score at halftime was Collegiate 8, Rata 4. Collegiate did not find it difficult to maintain this lead ,and by superior passing and shooting ran out winners by 5 goals. McKenzie’s (18) v. kiwi (14). In the first spell by displaying pace and initiative McKenzie’s were leading by 3 goals. The second spell had not commenced long before it was apparent that Kiwi were determined to put their best foot forward in order to secure victory. McKenzie’s were also on the alertp but over-eagerness prevented more than one goal from being scored. They maintained their position, however, and finished well in front. PIRATES (19) v. WAIANIWA (8). Pirates were superior in very department of the game, and when halftime sounded had firmly established their position. When the game resumed they again took command and finished with a lead of 11 goals. Waianiwa did not finish off their movements, while their forwards were no match for the onposition forwards.

FIFTH GRADE. A number of fifth grade games were contested during the afternoon. After a very poor game Greenhills defeated Collegiate by 13 goals to 12. . Pirates just defeated Makarewa after a spirited contest by 16 goals to 15. A number of very small girls were playing in Makarewa’s ranks and under the circumstances they gave a very creditable display. St. Mary’s defeated Kiwi in a game characterized by flashes of bright play. Up till half-time St. Mary’s played with only two forwards and this hampered them considerably. As a result of this handicap Kiwi were leading at halftime, but in the second spell St. Mary’s play improved and they were able to run out winners by 8 goals to 5. Rosedale and Wallacetown fought out a fairly even game. The score at the finish was Rosedale 20, Wallacetown 18. St. Peter’s were superior to Rata in spite of the fact that they played with one forward short up till half-time. This was a good game from the spectators’ viewpoint. The score was as follows: St. Peter’s 20, Rata 15. EVENING TOURNAMENT. DRAW FOR WEDNESDAY.
