WINTER SHOW

PROFIT ABOUT £4O SATISFACTION EXPRESSED “I have much pleasure—much greater pleasure than in the past—in presenting the receipts and expenditure for the Winter Show. ' The show has been run at a loss since it was revived in 1925, but this year I can announce a profit ot about £40.” This announcement by the secretary (Mr A. L. Adamson) was received with applause by the directors of the Southland A. and P. Association at the monthly meeting yesterday when the president, Mr A. S. Holms, presided over Messrs John Macdonald, A. M. Weir, A. Home, H. Carswell, A. Campbell, R. Swale, W. Clark, G. S. Young, T. E. Paterson, James Young, W. R. Ronald, David Marshall and J. Gilkison. “Even if the cost of tar-sealing the road leading to the Showgrounds were deducted the fixture would still show a profit,” said Mr Adamson in presenting the statement of accounts. This disclosed that the door money was as follows:—

The revenue from a competition was £l9 5/9 compared with £lB 14/- in 1934. Entry fees totalled £172 3/(£l6B 15/-), space £l3O 19/6 (£B2 12/-), catalogues £5 10/3 (£5 7/9), donations £66 10/- (£65 12/-) and skins £4 0/6 (£3 7/6). The total receipts for 1935 were thus £748 17/6 as against £609 10/3 in 1934. On the expenditure side appeared £382 9/3 for prize money compared with £4lB 11/9 in 1934. Wages aggregated £B4 4/7, the previous figure being £lOO 19/3. The total expenditure was £709 17/6 apart from £3l for the cost of the road. The expenditure for the previous year was £761 8/6. The fixture thus showed a profit of nearly £4O, as against a loss of just on £152 in 1934. Helpful New Ideas. In expressing gratification at the improvement from a heavy loss to a profit the chairman said it was unfortunate that it had been necessary to reduce the prize money, but happily this had not affected the entries adversely. “We are greatly indebted to our town friends for the valuable work they carried out and for the new ideas they brought forward,” he added. “As far as the tar-sealing of the road is concerned, I don’t think it would be fair if this were debited to the Winter Show. It was a permanent improvement and a necessary one, particularly as the Winter Show will no doubt be a permanent fixture.” On behalf of the town committee Mr G. Taylor returned thanks, saying that the work had been taken up with the definite idea of making it a success. Many new ideas had been gained and these could be used profitably next year. He did not think that the paring down of prize money had mattered greatly, for exhibitors were in sympathy with the objects of the show. Mr A. Sutherland, town organizer, also returned thanks. A letter was received from the J. B. Ford Co. (N.Z.) Ltd. stating that the company had for the past 24 years offered a silver trophy for a butter grading competition among the members of the New Zealand Dairy Factory Managers’ Association, while at the Waikato Winter Show the company had had a trophy running for a number of years. The company was willing to present- a similar trophy for competition at the Southland Winter Show. The secretary remarked that the offer had been received too late for this year’s Winter Show, but it could receive consideration for next year. A number of letters offering congratulations on the success of the show and making suggestions for future improvements were also received. Ram Fair. Presenting a statement of accounts for the ram fair held by the association, the secretary reported that the profit on the fixture had been nearly £6O, as compared with £46 last year. The chairman said that'- the selling arrangements were most unsatisfactory’ and, in fact, almost primitive. The profit on the. fixture was pleasing, but a committee ought to be set up to go into the question of improving the selling arrangements. It was resolved that the grounds committee and the ram fair committee should endeavour to frame improvements before the next fixture. It was decided that a committee should go into the question of making revisions to the ewe hogget competition, Messrs Holms, Marshall, Watson and Paterson being appointed to the committee. The following remit, to be sent forward to the conference of the Royal Society, was carried: “That the council of the Royal Agricultural Society be requested to allocate championship medals on the recommendations of the district councils.”
