An Old Man's Story

—Highly Commended— I am an old Hen and I am going to tell you my story. When I was a chicken I had six sisters and two brothers, but two of my sisters died. Every day we had three meals and at night we went to bed under our mother. My mistress let us out of the coop, when we were a week old. When I became a pullet I was very proud of my first egg. When I had stayed at my old home for a year I was sold to.another woman. My mistress is very kind to me. I have only had one exciting adventure and that was on April 10, 1932. Having walked along a rail for a few yards I flew on to Darkie, the cow’s back. She ran about kicking her heels so hard that I flew off into the pigsty by an old porker, and I flew out again as quickly as I had flown in. I am now a very old hen, so I will leave you to think over my life. —3 marks to Cousin Iris Winsloe (10), Merrivale.
