ASSYRIANS IN IRAQ

QUESTION OF SECURITY. RE-SETTLEMENT PROPOSED. (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, July 16. In reply to a question in the House of Commons by Lord Cecil, Sir John Simon said the responsibility for providing for the security and relief of Assyrians in Iraq rested with the Iraq Government, which had undertaken to keep the Assyrian Committee of the League Council informed of the measures taken by it. He understood that the Iraq Government had now set up a committee, including certain of its officials of British nationality, to deal with the whole question of the relief and maintenance of Assyrians pending a decision as to their ultimate future. Sir John added that the Assyrian Committee of the League was still actively investigating the feasibility of arranging for the re-settlement of Assyrians outside Iraq and recently addressed an appeal to a number of governments inviting them to reconsider the possibility of accepting Assyrians in any of the territories under their control. The United Kingdom Government, which was among the governments approached, was giving the matter its earnest attention.
